We are ever so steadily approaching Christmas, and, with that, the beginning of the year 2010. And what is the best thing about the New Year? Why, the chance to crack open a new calendar!
However, many of us this year, who have stoically bought Torchwood calendars in the past few years, now feel disillusioned as to what will fill the calendar-shaped hole in their hearts. Well, I think we have a solution:
Why are we doing this?
Many fans who were upset with the events of Children of Earth are unwilling to buy the Official Torchwood Calendar this year. And even those who take no issue with the miniseries bemoan the lack of a decent calendar for Gareth David Lloyd . So we decided to try and do something about this, and have decided to create a unique, special calendar for Gareth David-Lloyd from the Save Ianto Jones Campaign - it will centre on Gareth and Ianto, with an attempt at bringing you some wonderful artwork as created by some incredibly talented artists, photo-manipulators and writers.
This calendar is not solely for members of the Save Ianto Jones Community. It is for all fans of Gareth and Ianto, and aims to bring you a product that is sadly lacking for this particular corner of the fandom. It has been organised and is being overseen by some members of the Save Ianto Jones Campaign, but it is being made available to all fans on Live Journal and beyond. So, if you have pictures, if you have talent, and if you love Gareth, then we want to hear from you!
This could not have come about without the input and suggestions of many wonderful people at the campaign, who I now call my friends. If you have any suggestions for the calendar, please do not hesitate to let me know - there is no "I" in "team".
Themes (Edited Section)
The basic theme of calendar will be "Gareth David Lloyd is Awesome" and can include Gareth or Ianto references. A sub-theme can be "...So Bring Him Back", but this is entirely optional.
However, in the knowledge that some artists prefer to have prompts to work with, or to find insiration from, we have decided to leave the themes here as an optional extra, which do NOT have to be adhered to have if you have your own ideas. So here they are for you again:
January – New Year – parties, rebirth (think ideas for Ianto's return, celebrating his imminent return,)
February – Valentines Day (Jack/Ianto, basically)
March – Gareth’s 29th Birthday (lots of pictures of Gareth birthday themes, party poppers, hats etc.)
April – Easter/Spring (Ianto and bunny ears, fluffy Easter bunnies, chicks, eggs, flowers etc.)
May – The Fan’s Man! – pictures of fans with Gareth.
June – Pictures from the Ianto Jones Shrine that has sprung up at the Bay.
July – “An injury to one is an injury to all” (Ianto dying - sadness, but the birth of the campain - resilience, dedication, never giving up)
August – Ianto’s birthday – photoshopped pictures of cards/presents sent (maybe some pictures of Gareth in costume, taken by people during filming, with party hats photoshopped in and suchlike)
September – Gareth Worldwide! Pictures of Gareth from cons from the greatest con-goer of the Torchwood fandom, including names of conventions/countries/states. Can also include pictures from the “Flat Ianto Project” – see here – but it is, of course, not compulsory.
October – Cartoons from khaldane and kinky_chichi
November – Children in Need – photos from fundraising, Pudsey/Ianto pictures, screencaps from JustGiving. Gareth with Pudsey ears etc. etc. Showing how Gareth and his character have inspired so much good.
December – Ianto-y Christmas!!
How will we choose designs?
If you have an idea for a month, then go for it. Design it, and email it to us, or post it on a comm and send us the link. We will pick our favourite for each month, but all designs will be made available for fans to see and marvel at. We are looking for people to draw, paint, photoshop or even use their Ianto dolls to artistic effect.
If you have something quirky in your head, or you are inspired by one of our themes/prompts, then go! We are waiting with bated breath for all you come up with!
(There is no limit to how many months you can enter for. Just beware that, if you enter for 12 months, you are unlikely to get all of them - if we like two of your designs, however, it is very likely that you will get two months. We will try to be fair, but we will be picking the best designs for the final calendar.)
As you know, the Save Ianto Jones Campaign has to be very careful as a community. We come under constant scrutiny, and there are those out there who wait to pounce on us for any mistake we make. So we are going to be strict about copyright issues. No official screencaps or promotional images from Torchwood can be used, as they belong to the BBC. Neither can professionaly taken photographs, such as the ones taken at the Hub, or the ones off-screen as featured in Torchwood Magazine, as these pictures belong to the creator, and we do not want to place the campaign in legal jeopardy.
However, any photos taken by you, of Gareth, of you and Gareth, of you at the Shrine, of you with a Ianto dolls etc. can be used. This includes pictures taken by you of the filming in Cardiff - we cannot use professionally taken photos or screencaps, but a lot of people took pictures of the filming, and during takes during the filming, and as the photo belongs to the creator, then these we may use. Just remember that, if you are using a personally taken photograph, which has been taken by somebody else, you must absolutely ask for their permission before including it in your designs.
We are looking for designs to be around about A4 in size, so that they would reasonable fit onto a calendar template (even if they have to be scaled down for different styles of calendar). Think A4 paper, or typical screen wallpaper sizes - even if they end up being the wrong size, if they are all the same kind of size we can easily edit them down equally.
I have also been informed that A4 is nigh on impossible to get in the US, so we would be grateful if you could supply your artwork in two forms - A4, and US letter-sized. This will make it easier for fans in the US to download and use the designs in the calendar.
Alternately, if anyone has better suggestions for sizes, then I will edit this particular bit of information to replace it with the more informed information.
Who do I send the designs to?
Email your designs direct to me at email@example.com, and I will send them on to the other members who are helping me to decide the overal designs.
I'm not an artist - how can I help?
We're looking for pictures than can be used by our artistic members. These include pictures of you with Gareth (not professionally taken pictures), pictures of you in Cardiff, Flat Ianto pictures, pictures of you at the Shrine, pictures of things you have sent to the BBC, pictures taken by you of the filming in Cardiff (i.e. Gareth in costume), pictures of you promoting the campaign, of Children in Need fundraising and so forth.
Also, if, on your travels, you find any really good photos taken by someone else, please ask permission to use them before taking. But please do ask! We're looking for as many as we can get!
Please send your photos to firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will make them available for download to the artists as soon as possible.
When is the deadline?
The current date for entries is 15th December, but this is open to extension depending on when we receive enough entries. This is so that we can have the designs judged and the winners announced by the 24th.If all goes well, the calendar will become available for download from the 26th.
How will it work?
The designs for each month will be made available in one downloadable file. We will include in the file a link to a website that will take the pictures from you and turn them into a professional looking calendar – for as cheap as we can find.
Will it cost anything?
It will cost nothing to download the file. However, the Save Ianto Jones Campaign is suggesting a voluntary donation of £4.56 to the Ianto Jones Children in Need Fund (www.justgiving.co.uk/iantojones). Just remember, this is NOT compulsory.
One Final Incentive??
We will be sending one to Gareth David-Lloyd. So there is a chance that, if you are successful, Gareth will see your artwork (and even, maybe, put it up on his wall all year!)
Thank you to all those who have expressed and interest, and we look forward to you work!!!!
